Radiosurgery Case study
Case 1: Brain metastasis from Lung cancer
Patient Background:
A 65-year-old female with a history of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) presented with a single brain metastasis, confirmed by MRI. She experienced headaches, slight weakness on her left side, and mild cognitive changes.
Treatment Approach:
Given the patient’s isolated brain metastasis and overall stable condition, she was considered an ideal candidate for single-fraction stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). The treatment was performed using advanced technology—CyberKnife®, which delivers highly precise radiation to the tumor while sparing healthy brain tissue.
Radiosurgery Details:
The patient underwent a single session of stereotactic radiosurgery. The tumor, measuring 1.9 cm in diameter, received a high dose of 20 Gy in a single fraction, focusing on the tumor with sub-millimeter precision. The surrounding healthy brain tissue received minimal radiation exposure.
Technology Involved:
CyberKnife® technology, which combines real-time imaging and robotic arm precision, was used. This allowed the radiation to adjust for any patient movement and ensured the highest accuracy. The dose distribution was carefully planned to limit radiation to critical brain structures.
Outcomes and Tumor Control:
Follow-up MRI scans at 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment showed excellent tumor control with significant shrinkage of the lesion. No new metastases were detected, and the patient did not require further brain-targeted treatments. Her systemic lung cancer remained under control with concurrent therapies.
Quality of Life:
The patient reported an improvement in symptoms, with her headaches resolving completely and her cognitive function returning to baseline. Importantly, no significant side effects from the radiosurgery were noted, and she maintained her daily activities with a high quality of life.
Conclusion:
Single-fraction radiosurgery using CyberKnife® proved highly effective in controlling the patient’s brain metastasis while preserving brain function and minimizing side effects. This treatment provided durable tumor control with excellent quality of life outcomes.
